Freelance Hourly Rate Calculator
Free hourly rate calculator for freelancers. Find the rate that reaches your income goal after expenses and tax.
How the freelance hourly rate calculator works
Enter your income goal, yearly expenses, billable hours and tax reserve to find the rate you should charge.
Formula
Revenue needed = (income + expenses) ÷ (1 − tax%). Hourly rate = revenue ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year).
Worked example
Example: 60,000 income + 6,000 expenses at 20% tax reserve = 82,500 revenue; at 25 hours × 46 weeks the rate is about 71.74 per hour.
FAQ
Why are billable hours lower than working hours?
Admin, sales and unpaid time take a large share of the week, so only part of it can be invoiced.
